You are walking through the park with your dog. Suddenly they see another dog in the distance and really want to say hi. Your dog takes off and leaves you in the dust.
You call your dog, but they blow you off and start playing with the other dog. That, right there, is the downfall of a lot of recall training:
The dog actually gets rewarded for not coming.
Your dog is not sad that they missed out on a treat from you or that you are mad at them. They’re thrilled to be able to play with another dog. Ignoring you means success for your dog!
Your dog learned, “If my owner calls, and I don’t listen, then I get to have fun!” Once your dog understands this, they will repeat it again and again and again.
Having a dog who doesn’t come when called is frustrating and disappointing. Even worse, it can put their life at risk if they don’t listen!
We at Dex's Doghouse are currently engaged with SpiritDog to rehabilitate poor Zoe who was scheduled to be put down October 14th, 2023.
She is a survivor of a house fire where 2 other pups and a kitty perished. Zoe is a foster who has PTSD. She is quite jumpy and reactive. However, in 1 week short week she becoming a happy, healthy dog, that is able interact with the pack of 4 rescues already in our home.
We renamed her from Dana, as it was her shelter name and really didn't fit her. So, learning the 'Come' command is a little more tricky because she is just learning to respond to her new name, but with this training she is already making progress with Stay and Come!
The 'Come' command is one that is not really negotiable. You need to know that whatever is happening, when you say 'Come', they stop and recall immediately. Not to be overly dramatic, but it is truly a matter of life and death. If they are chasing a ball, another animal, or whatever running into the street, the results can be tragic.
