Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC), also known as “kennel cough,” is a highly contagious respiratory infection that affects dogs. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of outbreaks, leaving pet owners concerned and curious about this mysterious illness.
The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) published this article earlier in December describing how this new outbreak differs from traditional kennel cough. In the article, it describes how the historical treatment is the antibiotic doxycycline, which works in 3 to 5 days, typically. However, this variant did not respond to the treatment and a handful of patients succumbed to the illness.
AAHA’s InfoGraphic Summary of CIRDC Outbreak
While the exact cause of CIRDC is often difficult to pinpoint, it is commonly caused by a combination of viruses and bacteria. The most common culprits include the canine parainfluenza virus, canine adenovirus type 2, and Bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria. These pathogens are easily spread through the air or direct contact with infected dogs.
The symptoms of CIRDC can vary from mild to severe and typically include a persistent cough, sneezing, nasal discharge, and lethargy. In some cases, dogs may also experience a loss of appetite and fever. It’s important to note that while CIRDC can be serious, most dogs recover with proper treatment and care.
If you suspect your dog has CIRDC, it is crucial to seek veterinary attention. Your veterinarian will perform a thorough examination and may recommend diagnostic tests to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment options for CIRDC may include antibiotics to target the bacterial infection, cough suppressants, and supportive care to help your dog recover.
Preventing the spread of CIRDC is essential, especially in environments where dogs gather, such as boarding facilities, dog parks, and training classes. Vaccination against the common pathogens can help reduce the risk of infection. Additionally, practicing good hygiene, such as regular handwashing and disinfecting surfaces, can also help prevent the spread of the disease.
As of December 16th, 2023, this CBS News Map Chart shows 16 states reporting cases of this outbreak. However, the AAHA reports only 10 states.
While CIRDC outbreaks can be concerning, staying informed and taking necessary precautions can help protect your furry friend. If you have any concerns or questions about CIRDC, consult with your veterinarian for guidance and peace of mind.
